When Sleep Turns Dangerous: Expert Interview on Diagnosis & Treatment
In this expert interview, ENT specialist Bhik Kotecha discusses Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) — a common but often overlooked sleep disorder where the airway repeatedly becomes blocked during sleep, causing breathing to stop and start.
He explains that OSA affects both adults and children, and symptoms often include loud snoring, gasping for breath during sleep, daytime tiredness, and poor concentration.
The video explores:
What causes OSA
Who is at risk
How it’s diagnosed (often with a sleep study)
Treatment options, from lifestyle changes and CPAP machines to surgical solutions in some cases
Dr. Kotecha stresses that untreated OSA can lead to serious health problems like high blood pressure, heart disease, and memory issues—but with the right care, it’s highly manageable.
What Your Breathing at Night Says About Your Health
n this video, ENT specialist Bhik Kotecha explains the different types of sleep-related breathing disorders, such as snoring, obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), and central sleep apnoea.
These conditions cause breathing to repeatedly stop and start during sleep, which leads to poor-quality rest, daytime tiredness, and can increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and memory problems.
Dr. Kotecha also highlights key warning signs like loud snoring, gasping for air during sleep, morning headaches, and poor concentration.
He encourages early diagnosis through sleep studies and offers treatment options ranging from lifestyle changes (like weight loss or sleeping position) to CPAP machines or surgery, depending on severity.
Proper treatment can greatly improve sleep, energy levels, and long-term health.
Is Snoring Normal? Understanding Sleep Apnoea in Children and Adults
In this video, ENT specialist Bhik Kotecha explains the causes and symptoms of snoring and sleep apnoea in both adults and children.
Snoring is often harmless, but if it’s loud and regular—especially if breathing stops during sleep—it could be a sign of sleep apnoea, a condition where airways become blocked during sleep. This can lead to poor sleep, tiredness, and health issues like high blood pressure.
In children, large tonsils or adenoids are a common cause, while in adults, it can be due to weight, nasal problems, or soft tissue in the throat.
Dr. Kotecha highlights when to seek help—such as frequent night waking, gasping for air, or daytime sleepiness—and outlines treatment options, from lifestyle changes to surgery or CPAP machines.
Getting proper diagnosis and treatment can improve sleep, health, and quality of life.
The Link Between Glue Ear and Hearing Loss: What You Need to Know
Glue ear happens when thick fluid builds up behind the eardrum, making it harder to hear clearly. It’s common in children but can also affect adults.
In this video, ENT expert Bhik Kotecha explains how glue ear can cause temporary hearing loss, especially after colds or infections. Children with glue ear may struggle to hear in class, speak clearly, or respond to sounds.
Most cases clear up on their own, but if hearing doesn’t improve after a few weeks or months, medical advice may be needed. Treatments include simple monitoring, hearing tests, or tiny tubes (grommets) to drain the fluid.
Early detection and treatment can help avoid speech or learning delays in children and improve hearing for adults.
Don’t Ignore These Voice Issues – When to See an ENT Specialist
Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder characterized by repeated pauses in breathing or shallow breaths during sleep. These pauses in breathing can occur dozens or even hundreds of times per night and can last for seconds or even minutes. Sleep apnea can lead to poor quality sleep and can have negative effects on overall health.
Treatment for sleep apnea
may include lifestyle changes such as weight loss and exercise, positional therapy, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, oral appliances, and surgery in some cases. It is important to seek medical attention if you suspect you may have sleep apnea, as untreated sleep apnea can lead to serious health consequences such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke.
